CONTROVERSIAL sites for future homes are being suggested across the Lancaster district.
Lancaster City Council needs to identify enough sites to accommodate approximately 6,000 new homes over the next 15 years.
It is a requirement of national and regional planning policy.
The council is undertaking its most comprehensive assessment ever of housing opportunities naming controversial sites such as Whinney Carr in Scotforth and Morecambe's Town Hall and Winter Gardens.
Also mooted in the 500 areas for possible housing are Carnforth Cricket Ground, the Bubbles site in Morecambe and Caton and Hornby Primary Schools.
At this stage the suggested places have not been assessed, they only represent sites with potential.
The Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) will investigate the potential sites, examining their suitability, achievability and availability for housing.
The final assessment is likely to be available early in 2009, and the results of the study will be a major consideration in allocating future development..
