Drivers in the north west waking up to snow and ice are being urged to slow down, light up and leave extra room for braking on the region's motorways and other trunk roads.

The Highways Agency's contractors have been out gritting overnight to keep the region's drivers on the move. However, snow and ice is affecting parts of Cumbria and Greater Manchester and there have already been a dozen minor collisions on the region's motorways.

The Highways Agency is also currently clearing lane three of the northbound M6 between junctioons 37 east of Kendal and junction 39 up to Shap.
