Lancaster scores record A-level results
Published Date:
14 August 2008
RECORDS for A-Level results were broken yet again at schools across Lancaster.
Ripley St Thomas CE High School recorded its best A-Level results yet, with just under 50 per cent of all students achieving A and B grades.
This is a 10 per cent increase on last year's results, with students achieving a 99 per cent pass rate in all subjects.
Headteacher Liz Nicholls said: " I am totally delighted for the students who have worked so hard to achieve such excellent results."
A number of students at the school achieved at least four A grades: Ben Lees, Eleanor Symmonds, Lucy Gager, Michael Beatty, Sophie Randles, Johannes Gausden, Andrew Baines.
Lancaster Royal Grammar School also recorded a record year, with 54 per cent of grades at grade A, and 79 per cent at grades A and B.
Thirty-four boys gained at least four grade As, and the overall pass rate was 99.8 per cent.
Head Andrew Jarman said: "Last year was our previous record and this year group has done even better. They really have made incredible progress and I am very pleased."
This was not a strong year group judging by their GCSE results two years ago, but the boys have really blossomed in the Sixth Form.
At the top end, 16 boys achieved five A grades.
They included Chris Coxhill of Morecambe; Charlie Crossley from Halton; Chris Jackson of Slyne; Peter May, Tim Ramsey, Jon-Pierre Sunderland and John Williams, of Lancaster; James Jones of Catterall; and Mark Ward of Pilling.
Lancaster Girls' Grammar School is celebrating another successful year, with 69 per cent of their results coming at grades A and B.
Jenny Roberts gained six A grades, while twins Rosalind and Vanessa Donhowe-Mason were also among the biggest successes.
The girls, who were home educated and joined LGGS in the sixth form, both took five A-levels, with Rosalind gaining all grades As and Vanessa gaining four As and a B.
Rosalind now hopes to study law, while Vanessa will be returning to LGGS nnext term to take a chemistry A-level to allow her to study medicine.
Four other girls - Rosie O'Neill, Becky Richmond, Vera Zhang and Sarah Taylor - also gained five A grades.
Head Jackie Cahalin said: "We are really pleased with the results; we had an almost 100 per cent pass rate.
"There were a lot of individual success stories from students who have overcome difficulties, which is always pleasing.
"They were a lovely year group who worked hard and deserve their results and we are delighted for them."
Our Lady's Catholic College saw record results this year, with an overall pass rate of 95 per cent.
Des Coyle, head of sixth form, said: "We are delighted that our highest achievers have done significantly better than any previous year group with almost half of all passes being at the top grades A and B.
"Special congratulations go to Becky Dugdale, Elliott Adamson, Rachel Lammiman, Josh Parker, Angela Sutton and Damon Kilcawley who achieved straight A grades in all their A-level subjects.
"The vast majority of our Year 13 students have now secured entrance to their chosen university. All three of our students hoping to be doctors have been accepted to study medicine at their first choice of university and in September should be reunited at Liverpool University.
Casterton's sixth form girls were celebrating too having achieved more than 70% of A grades - the best ever in the school's long academic tradition. Twelve girls gained straight As - including Katie Lehmann from Kirkby Lonsdale; Ayla Newton from Arnside; and Holly Story of Low Bentham.
Headmaster, Dr Peter McLaughlin, was delighted with the best results in the school's 180-year history.
"With so many records tumbling at the Olympics this week, there is a rather nice sense of synchronicity about our girls' achievement! Not every August can bring record results but this year we are so proud of our girls for demolishing all past records."
Giggleswick School also achieved a record pass rate with more than 42 per cent of the exams taken being awarded an A grade.
Headmaster, Geoffrey Boult said: "In spite of record results the individual stories at Giggleswick are more important, as is the 'value added' that the school gives each pupil."
Among the exceptional local candidates was Jennifer Hill, of Settle who achieved six A grades and will be reading psychology and philosophy at Brasenose College, Oxford.
