'Unprecedented' roadworks on Lancaster's roads

AN "unprecedented" volume of roadworks have been carried out on Lancaster district's roads over the past year.
Almost 6000 roadwork notices have been received and processed by Lancashire County Council since April relating to 2820 different sites, according to a report written for a Lancashire Locals meeting on Tuesday.
The majority of the work has been to upgrade the existing underground infrastructure to meet current health and safety requirements, to improve reliability and to increase capacity.
The report said that most works done by utility companies must now be registered with the county council.
This is done by issuing a range of notices in advance of works being undertaken, to allow time for planning and to minimise disruption, and to enable a number of works to be carried out at the same time.
Major works across the district have included the strengthening of Broadway Bridge in Morecambe, gas main replacement in Morecambe, Heysham, Hest Bank, Carnforth and Warton and United Utilities' installation of a new electricity main from Caton Road to a sub station in Spring Garden Street in Lancaster.
Lancashire County Council has also been undertaking works around the district relating to highway resurfacing, traffic calming and relighting projects, which have involved a combination of road closures and traffic control.
Works have included the A601(M) in Carnforth, Ashton Road, Barley Cop Lane and Powderhouse Lane in Lancaster and Northgate in Morecambe.
Work involving major closures and diversions which will take place later in the current financial year includes resurfacing of Central Drive and Euston Road in Morecambe.
Information about major works and activities can be found in the 'Road Works Bulletin' on Lancashire County Council's website.
