STAFF at Lancaster tax office could lose their jobs after the treasury decided to press ahead with plans to close the branch.
The 45 employees based at Charter House in Dalton Square had campaigned for the office to be saved after it was earmarked for closure as part of a review by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) aimed at finding efficiency savings.

But HMRC today announced that the office will be one of more than 90 to close across the country.

An impact assessment provides for only six of its staff to relocate to offices in Preston. The others face an uncertain future, although a scaled down enquiry centre could be maintained at Charter House or nearby.

The assessment says 'opportunities may exist' for them to transfer to other Government departments such as the Crown Prosecution Service or Department for Work and Pensions.

HMRC does not expect to vacate Charter House until spring 2011.
