YOUNGSTERS at Torrisholme Primary School got the shock of their lives when they arrived at school last Friday – an alien spaceship had landed on their playing field!

The children were summoned into assembly where acting head Tania Hughes broke the news, to the shock of many of those gathered.

They were then given the task of looking for clues, gathering information and interviewing eye-witnesses before writing an article for their new school newspaper.

Fortunately for all concerned, the out-of-this-world encounter was part of a simulation exercise organised by staff to celebrate Everybody Writes Day.

Maria Thomas, subject leader of literacy and Year 6 teacher, said: "The whole idea was to inspire the children to write, and to kick-start setting up a school newspaper."

The children were sent home with letters at the end of the day explaining exactly what the event had involved, to ensure none spent the weekend looking for UFOs.
